ENGL 302 Narrative and the Novel
Unit Aims
This unit of study aims to develop:
- advanced textual analysis and critical practice
- a range of methodologies for literary study, via a detailed and sustained enquiry into narrative theory and the construction of textual meaning in the novel in English
- advanced research techniques, including familiarity with and understanding of published scholarship on narrative theory and the particular novels studied
- advanced techniques for writing about narrative and the novel
Unit Outcomes
On completion of this unit of study, students should:
- be able to demonstrate advanced critical practices relating to interpretation, textual analysis, and academic writing
- understand and be able to describe the way pace and focalization are managed; character and agency presented; consciousness represented; and style and rhetoric used in novels
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the novel in its social context
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of narrative theory, including genre theory, advanced research techniques, and familiarity with published scholarship in the field
