Profile

Marcelle Freiman focuses on creative writing and post-colonial writing and theory, including the literatures of diaspora.

She also has a special research interest in the South African writer, J. M. Coetzee, and in issues of writing and politics, South African writing and writing of the Holocaust. She also has close interests in poetry and in Australian migrant writing.

Her research in the theory of creative writing pedagogy is published in a number of articles. Her work on diaspora has a special focus on memory and history. She has published articles and book chapters that include Australian writers such as Peter Skrzynecki, Fay Zwicky, Arnold Zable, Lily Brett, Mark Baker and Alex Skovron.

Marcelle is also a published poet. Her book of poetry Monkey's Wedding was published in 1995 and was highly commended for the ASAL Mary Gilmore Award. She has poetry and prose published in journals and magazines in Australia and the UK, and her poems have been read on radio and at live readings.

She teaches two undergraduate units in Creative Writing, both of which are offered to external and distance students as online teaching. She also teaches post-colonial literatures and film, an Honours unit on diaspora literatures, and in 2009 offers a new postgraduate MA literature corsework unit 'Literature of Migration', with an online component.

In 2008 Marcelle Freiman was awarded The Macquarie University Vice Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence.
