Doctor of Philosophy

The Department offers supervision in the research degrees of MPhil and PhD.

The Department has one of the largest enrolments of research degree students in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The PhD is the usual professional qualification for a university lectureship in Australia.

Admission Requirements

Admission to Higher Degree Research candidature normally requires a good BA Honours degree (minimum 2:1) in English (or a closely related discipline) or its equivalent (e.g. a credit average in an MA coursework program, including a research project weighted at 25% and completed at Distinction level). Mid-year entry is possible. Research degrees may include a creative component

Study towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy is undertaken by completing a research project and submitting a thesis of up to 100,000 words in length. The thesis is examined externally.

Length of Candidature

2-4 years full-time, 2-8 years part-time. External candidature available in special circumstances.

The Department must approve the project, and be satisfied that it has the resources and facilities to supervise it. Usually, two supervisors are assigned. The student works in consultation with these supervisors.

To satisfy requirements for the degree, the thesis must form a distinct English candidates proceed primarily by thesis, which should not exceed 50,000 words for MPhil or 100,000 words for a PhD. The creative/non-traditional thesis is comprised of creative and research components. Candidates are also required to complete the commencement program in their first year of enrolment. A presentation of a work-in-progress session is required of candidates at this time.

Master of Philosophy – MPhil

The Master of Philosophy is undertaken by research, leading to submission of a thesis of up to 50,000 words. The thesis is examined externally.

Candidates must attend the Division of Humanities Commencement Program in their first year of study.

It is expected that the thesis will make a contribution to knowledge and afford evidence of originality, as for the PhD, but commensurate with the smaller scope of the MPhil thesis.
