Gina Mercer, Tasmanian novelist, poet, and editor of Island magazine spends three weeks as a guest of the Department of English, in August 2008. As well as focusing on her own writing, Gina will be to meeting one-to-one with our creative PhD students and other postgraduates to discuss their creative work; will give seminars on writing and editing to staff and students; and a public lecture and reading of her work. Generously funded this year by the Copyright Agency Ltd, Gina Mercer's residency extends and builds on the many wonderful resident and visiting writers we have had to the Department over the past four years. In her own words, Gina describes the benefits of her upcoming residency as:

“Throughout my career as an editor and creative writing teacher I have dedicated a large portion of my energy to fostering the work of other writers. This is joyous work (for the most part) and I am passionate about doing it. Nourishing though this work is, it is also essential to my writing practice to have dedicated time to focus primarily on creating my own new work. I have held several residencies in the past and in each of them I have found the time away from home, clear of everyday work and family demands, enormously beneficial. Travelling to Macquarie University will provide me opportunities to share ideas and conversations...”
